Hate to say it, but she’s no Kate Bishop.

Don’t you sass me, child.
I’m a 42 year old mother of 2. Yesterday, I *slept in* until 4:30am, got my babies up and fed, planned an Easter brunch menu, finished a batch of rewrites, worked all day writing more comics than you, managed to sneak in 30 minutes on the treadmill and a quick shower before grabbing my hilarious and brilliant husband, two amazing children and double-batch potluck dish and heading to a seder at the home of two of our best friends, where I *rocked* playing with my daughter and her new bow & arrow out on the porch.
Kate Bishop is great. I love Kate. But she’s a fiction, sweetheart, and she’s no fucking me.

"I want to see more girl monsters. Girl giants, girl dragons, hulks & trolls. Scylla and hydra. Girl monsters who are huge and whole. Teeth and plush fur and long muscled tails. Heads enough to see you anywhere. Gleaming green or brown. But girl monsters are usually zombies or vampires. Pale and thin, bleeding or dead. Not Lady Lazarus, not a phoenix from the ash. I want to see how you get strong without being broken first. Get strong and stay strong. Get big and bigger."

#’getting strong without being broken first’ is like all i want from anything but especially girl monster stories  #stop making women small before you let them be big  #i am tired of revenge stories  #i am tired of all my heroines hurting

'REACTIVE DYNAMISM'

A dynamic “second skin” which articulates a wearer’s need for personal space by responding to and exaggerating his body language. The piece changes position depending on the movement the wearer makes with each arm.

We used a combination of digital fabrication techniques and handcrafting to get this result.

UNLOCKING THE TRUTH IS THE MOST BRUTAL SIXTH GRADE METAL BAND EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER

Last Thursday I took the L train to the end of the line and caught up with Unlocking the Truth, a heavy metal trio composed of three sixth graders, Malcolm Brickhouse, Jarad Dawkins and Alec Atkins. We were first made aware of these guys after we saw some of their videos on YouTube, which show the trio absolutelydestroying Times Square. Some people have referred to them as “childcore,” but those people probably can’t play music well enough to appreciate the epic crushiness these 11-year-olds pump out. These guys play seriously brutal metalcore, and they’re better than whatever sixth grade band you were in. This is what we’re talking about:

Does your mom listen to metal too?
Malcolm: No. She listens to R&B.
Jarad: She listens to house music.

Are you guys trying to educate your parents about metal?
Jarad: No. My mom just likes the songs we make. She doesn’t like the songs that we listen to.

Where do you guys get the ideas for your songs?
Jarad: Well, people judge Malcolm about… he wears nail polish and I dealt with it once and I see what Malcolm felt because everybody judged him, but I ignored it and I think he does too.

I see on the wall that you guys have a lot of dates lined up for summer—Webster Hall, Lincoln Center—are those for real?
Jarad: No, those are our imaginary tour dates. Places that we want to go when we get big and successful.

Oh. Huh. Are you guys just into metal or do you like other music?
Malcolm: I’m into metal and pop.
Jarad: I’m into metal and hip hop and R&B.
Alec: I’m into metal and dubstep and pop.

Who are some of your biggest influences?
Jarad: We like to listen to Motionless in White. Malcolm and Alec like Escape the Fate, but I don’t. Mainly my favorite band right about now is Chelsea Grin, a deathcore band. They haven’t stopped touring since 2008, they have an EP called Evolve which I listen to almost everyday.
Malcolm: This is our interview not theirs.
Jarad: I know.

These are the raddest fucking kids, ever.

Do they need roadies? I’ll tune their guitars, I’ll carry their drums, I’ll get them juice boxes, whatever.

"

The most impressive naval career of all the female sailors is that of William Brown, a black woman who spent at least twelve years on British warships, much of this time in the extremely demanding role of captain of the foretop. A good description of her appeared in London’s Annual Register in September 1815: “She is a smart, well-formed figure, about five feet four inches in height, possessed of considerable strength and great activity; her features are rather handsome for a black, and she appears to be about twenty-six years of age.” The article also noted that “in her manner she exhibits all the traits of a British tar and takes her grog with her late messmates with the greatest gaiety.”

Brown was a married woman and had joined the navy around 1804 following a quarrel with her husband. For several years she served on the Queen Charlotte, a three-decker with 104 guns and one of the largest ships in the Royal Navy. Brown must have had nerve, strength, and unusual ability to have been made captain of the foretop on such a ship….The captain of the foretop had to lead a team of seamen up the shrouds of the foremast, and then up the shrouds of the fore-topmast and out along the yards a hundred feet or more above the deck….

At some point in 1815, it was discovered that Brown was a woman and her story was published in the papers, but this does not seem to have affected her naval career….What is certain is that Brown returned to the Queen Charlotte and rejoined the crew.
